I had the privilege to hear Professor Mark Daley present at Western University last week at OAPPA ’25.  Mark is on Maclean’s magazine’s “Power List 2024” of the top 100 Canadians shaping the nation and gave a wonderful, thought provoking presentation – sometimes depressing, sometimes thrilling!

      Key points

      • #1 TIP: Start now and provide training

      • schedule regular times (bi-weekly) with your team to explore the basic tools (ChatGPT, CoPilot, Gemini);  have fun!
      • it can be as simple as demonstrating how to get started

      • AI is here and its capacity is growing exponentially

      • in the last 6-months, world-renown mathematician (Fuller prize winner) had 40-years of study replicated in 3-hours by AI

           High tide raises all boats

      • 2016: World champion Go player beaten in 3 of 5 matches at world championship by AI (first time AI even tried competing)

      • Profound impact on individual’s self-worth BUT resulted in notable global improvements in average tournament scores since, after decades of stagnate average scores.

      • New players training against AI to improve!

      • AI is not judgmental and is available 24/7

        • e.g. student looking for advice at 2am on how to pass a final exam the next morning for a class he did not attend or participate in assignments.  How would a professor respond?

These are excellent takeaways, Rich! Thanks for sharing. I especially like “#1 Tip: Start now and provide training” and the observation about a “High tide raises all boats”.
