      Hi All,

Wondering how other Colleges are addressing smudging in both main campus buildings AND in residence buildings. Questions are:

      1. Do you have designated smudging areas or can smudging happen anywhere? Do you have dedicated exhaust for it or are your FA systems able to handle the smoke generated?

      2. Are students able to smudge anywhere in a residence buildings (i.e. all of their rooms?), or are there designated rooms or designated spaces?

      Thank you all!!

      Hello,

At Loyalist we have designated smudging areas at our main building with exhaust controls and heat detectors. All smudging is coordinated through the Indigenous Resource Centre (IRC).

The IRC has performed smudging in other areas of the College.  Facilities schedules the fire alarm in by-pass during the smudging.

For the first time last year, the IRC smudged in a couple of residence suites.  No action was required as the smoke detectors in the suites only report back as troubles on the fire panel, Facilities and Security simply acknowledged any alarms that came in.

Please let me know if you require additional information.

      Hi Nadeen,

You may remember our Indigenous ‘Kalihwiyo’ Circle in our Library Learning Commons during your visit to Fanshawe last year.  It’s a designated smudging area with specialized HVAC as well.  I’ve attached our Standard Operating Procedure document which may provide some perspective on this and other designated areas in the College.
